Should You Buy the Matching Chair?

If you are not super confident in your decorating choices, it can be tempting to head off to your local furniture store and pick out a new sofa and loveseat set, maybe even the matching chair…

Not so fast! You might need a design intervention.

While it is tempting to get that chair, finish the set off and be done with it, resist your desire for instant gratification (depending on the size and shape of the room, and the people most likely to use it, I might not even suggest the loveseat).

The best rooms are created when a variety of textures, shapes, styles and colors are present and they usually either evolve over time, or at least look like they have. You can’t get that evolved look when all of the furniture so clearly was purchased on the same day!

While a sofa is a big investment and should be chosen with timelessness in mind, an accent chair is a perfect place to introduce a little wow factor. You can be a bit more whimsical with a chair since it isn’t quite as big an investment, making a chair a great place to introduce color or pattern that might be a bit more trendy. Chairs additionally allow chi, and people, to move more freely around a space and are perfect to tuck into a smaller space or corner.

Choose a chair that is scaled correctly for the space, neither too big nor too small. If your room needs a little extra interest, choose one that is significantly different than the sofa. For example a wooden chair rather than upholstered. If you are looking for a more subdued look, try a similar color but a new shape, or vise-verse.

A chair is a great place to introduce your personality. You can take a plain-Jane sofa, pair it with a perfect chair and you have instant style. There are so many choices! Fun and funky, traditional, modern; there really is something for everyone.
