Are Laundry Lines Good Feng Shui?

Every spring I get excited over the strangest thing – my laundry. Now trust me, for 3/4 of the year, laundry is just a chore that has to be done, I don’t give it too much thought. I neither like it or dislike it, it is just one of those things that has to get done during the course of the week.

But spring time is different. As soon as the weather is warm enough to venture outdoors I put up my laundry line. For me, it’s a weird obsession. I simply love drying my clothes on a laundry line. It’s hard to even explain how much I enjoy watching them flap in the wind. It’s a perfect example of the Tao of nature – doing something, while doing nothing at all. Doing, without trying.

Are Laundry Lines good Feng Shui?

So – are laundry lines good Feng Shui?

My answer, a resounding YES!

Here’s 6 good reasons why:

1. Feng Shui is about living in harmony with the natural world and using a laundry line to dry your clothing puts nature to work while using less energy. It’s a truly green solution. Depending on how much laundry you do and your personal energy costs you can save between $10 – $30 per month by not using your dryer.

2. Clothes are cleaner. Using the power of the sun is a good green alternative to chemical bleaches. Clean clothes make us feel fresher, that enhances our chi, and that is great Feng Shui.

3. Using a laundry line rather than your dryer keeps your house cooler. Not only does that save on air conditioning costs but a comfortable house is more enjoyable to live in.

4. Clothes don’t shrink, though they can fade if you leave them too long (remember the bleaching part?). Air drying saves the life of your clothing and keeps them from shrinking too. Not having to replace your clothes as often ultimately reduces your consumption. That is good for all of us.

5. No ironing! This is one of my favorite parts about having a laundry line. T-shirts come out flat and crisp and sheets are amazing right off of the line. Besides the obvious energy savings of not plugging in the iron, I’ve only ever met one or two people who really enjoy ironing – I’m not one of them. So for me, not having to do a chore that I don’t enjoy increases my personal well being. Good Feng Shui.

6. Washed items smell fresh, without fabric softener. To me, clothes right off of the line smell like sunshine, and sometimes like whatever is blooming in my yard. My line is situated right next to a patch of lilacs so for a few weeks of the year, my laundry smells like lilacs. What could be better than that?

I am known to be very cranky if I’m not the first to get into a freshly made bed when the sheets are off the line. I love it when the sheets are crisp and they smell of sunshine,

or lilacs!
